Old ship methods cannot be deleted, cannot be renamed, and can still be selected by users.
1) Add an Active/Inactive flag to the table and utilize so that old shipping methods can be retired.
2) Allow for renaming of the Shipping Method so that they can be revised to reflect changes from shippers.

Excellent suggestion. Without the ability to rename, it's difficult to remember the prior name.
I don't ever think it wise to rename an original file as you have the trouble of it changing the name on all the old records as that is how the database is set up I believe. We just number our ship vias and then change the description if necessary.
This active/inactive flag should be added to anything that can't be deleted.
This is now planned for version 2021 of Sage 500 ERP. It is part of a broader effort for minor entities. Buyers and Reason Codes were addressed in version 2019.
This capability has been added in version 2021.
The inactive ship method ability has been added in 2021. The rename feature may appear at a later date.
