Tabs are very functional. However, the ability to control the width of these does not exists, thus limiting the functionality. Monitors are cheap and most people have at least a 19" monitor. More than likely, a widescreen monitor. Provide the ability to utilize this hardware and provide more functionality, in one screen, to our users.
