When the only or first product on a WO is incorrect, it must be deleted & re-added. It cannot be edited. The delete & re-add does not re-use the 1000 value of the MFGLIN field in the MFGITM table. This affects the list in the left hand pane as only 1000 MFGLIN product descriptions are displayed. The solution is either 1) to allow direct in-place editing of the product ID in the work order screen, keeping MFGLIN=1000 or 2) to re-use MFGLIN 1000 if it is available when a product is added to a WO. (Or maybe some other angle I don’t perceive.)

Seeing the product description in the left pane is important to our maintenance planners. (Though I had to customize that pane to include that and many other fields. That's a wide scroll for them now but it is what they wanted so they could selectively filter.)
