The construct of the customer returns function does not match the segregation of duties in a typical organization. A support organization typically takes the call and creates the RMA. This initial RMA should be accompanied with a customer supplied reason for the return (you cannot enter this today).
The RMA should be completely modifiable up until downstream actions are taken (credit memo, stock return, etc.).

The same function should NOT be used to perform the stock update. The stock update should be managed like a normal receipt but with the ability to choose an RMA just like a PO or intersite shipment.
