I would like to be able to do an alpha sort by last name in Excel, but when the whole name is in one cell, the alpha sort is by first name. I need to dump employee information into Excel so I can convert it for various reports. Employee census information for example, required by our group health insurance carrier and our 402(k) plan.

  • Excel allows you to do this. Under the Data tab, use the text to column feature. Just make sure you have a few empty columns next to the column with the names.
