Do not force a backup before the database update. Most all of us do an On-Demand backup before upgrading anything. Simply pop up a message box reminding us to do an on-demand backup if we haven't already done so. It is a complete waste of our time to keep doing backups all the time, especially if there is a problem or error with the database update... then we are forced to suffer through the backups AGAIN, only to hit another error and suffer though the backups AGAIN just trying to fix the update error. PLEASE STOP forcing the backups. One of our company backups takes a half hour just by itself to backup... if we encounter and error or problem with the database update 2 times... that's an HOUR of our time wasted!!!

Takes almost two hours to do our backup... heartily endorse this!!!
The system has to make a backup before it can upgrade or archive in case it runs into issues, it has something to restore back to. If your backups are taking too long you either need the Attachment Manager program by Wright Office Solutions (check the size of the attachment folder; anything over 5GB is too much), or your server is not meeting the recommended system requirements.
