6 digits is not enough characters for a systematic approach to assigning numbers to paygroups. In CA the DIR issues new rates twice a year, there are many times more than 10 classifications per craft, and some craft packages vary by region. For example, right now I use
2 digits for year
1 digit for issuance
1 or 2 digits for region (depending on number of regions)
1-2 digits for craft (depending on how many crafts the client performs)
1-2 digits for classification depending on how many apprentice levels they have in addition to journeyman, foreman, etc.
So we already need up to 9, but can only use 6.
This is especially important when prior payroll person has used all 6 for paygroups that are a mess and we need to restructure. HELP!
