In some states material is taxable (not labor) it would be nice if the system would allow a tax calculation on the material sale amount but on the labor.

Exactly - we're running into this problem all the time now. Our state doesn't have a sales tax, but we work in several that do. Our old software used to tax the small job appropriately, but Sage doesn't. Our old software is DOS-based - in 2016!!!! - and can do it, I don't understand why Sage can't.
Agreed with this. I usually advise people to create a "tax-included" tax rate / group and put the full amount on the small job work order. It can later be backed out/calculated via reporting.
