In PJC you should be able to have a segment as autonumbering so that if contract is made up of multiple segment codes you end up with ABC-XX-0001 and the next contract you created would be ABC-XX-0002 etc. Make this an option under the segment type like you can in Norming Asset Management it's exactly the same logic.

At present you have to manually go an find out what the last number is and then put in one higher so it is unique, this is cumbersome and annoying and you quite often end up with gaps in the contract number ranges which looks silly and more questions start being asked because some people think that things are missing when in fact they are not.
