a couple of years ago we had a custom ASP page written that allowed a user to create a Excel sheet for updates to company and or person records. The way it worked is column A on the Sheet was the index and column b to ?? was values to be updated. There was no dedupe engine on this so column A had to be exact. This was done with a tracking ID code. This could also be done by exposing the ID fields.

This application was used to update annual sales data from an SAP system to CRM but the ides has many uses and should be added to the system as a standard option in the data load areas.
