Max Length for Optional Field Values

Having 60 characters as a max length for an optional field can be pretty limiting at times. There must be some programming reason why it is only 60 characters. It would be nice if it has a max length of 250 or like A/R & A/P comments of 2500. Of course common sense would prevail and you would limit the max size of the field length when you set it up in Common Services.
