Allow a configuration where, based upon vendor or customer group, auto assign the next customer or vendor number in a sequence. And then provide the option not to allow a general user to override the number assignment.

I can agree with this as I just had to upload 400 new customers. We use the first letter of the name to separate into groups, so it would have been nice if it were dynamic in someway. OR, we would be totally fine if customer numbers we just number and simply auto-generated the next in sequence.
