Have CRM keep track of the next customer number and assign it during the customer promotion.
In other words, eliminate the need to decide on what the customer number should be.

Another thing I believe would be an added advantage is to let the customer pick the starting no or the way they would like to generate the customer number that is alpha-numeric/numeric etc. something like what Sage CRM does for orders/quotes.
