We use piece rates sporadically but if there is no timecard entry for pieces, there is an error message generated when you calculate payroll.
There should be an option to use piece rates the same way that a bonus is handled such that if there is no bonus to be paid, there is no timecard entry to be made.
Piece rates are used instead of hours because there are no additional hours worked and adding hours for this type of thing would provide the wrong number of hours for a record of employment.
