I understand that Timberline had a bad experience in the past with multiuser access but it is time to restore this.
we typically have 3 -4 estimators working on a project who are usually working on unrelated trades. our current solution to that is to have 4 separate estimates and combine them at the end. this often results in poorly compatible WBS codes and the loss of Assembly and etakeoff links. It is often necessary to break the estimate apart again and reassemble it after detailed review.

Other software does not appear to have any challenges with enforcing record lock on active records such that only one person can access a record at a time.
I would encourage a notification on the top of the screen that identifies the other users currently accessing the estimate.

There may be merit in identifying the estimator who created the item and separately who last edited the item, if this could be added to the WBS structure (we already use a WBS code to identify the Estimator) then reports could be created to identify records that have been edited by someone other than the creator.- usually the manager!
